When it comes to combinations and feints, a lot of people focus on trying to learn the advanced stuff before they master the basics. A good feint will cause your opponent to react to your feint, giving you an opportunity to find a hole in their defense.

Here are 3 Muay Thai feints that you should know and use during sparring.

#1. The Fake Teep

The fake teep is a move that everyone needs to have in their tool belt. When you get good at throwing fake teeps, you can use them to set up your your strikes from a safe position. The best part of the fake teep is that it will cause your opponent to react, especially if you land a few teeps on them before you throw it.

The key to throwing the feint teep, is to focus on quickly raising the leg in the same motion as a teep, and then allowing your opponent to react. When your opponent has reacted to the fake, you can then throw any number of techniques at them.

#2. The Fake Kick

Knowing how to throw a feint kick is one of the most important skills you can have in sparring. After you reach a certain level in Muay Thai, people will always block kicks unless you can disguise them. A kick feint is a key tool is forcing your opponent to react to your kick, and then allowing you to throw something else at them.

The key to throwing the kick feint is to focus on using your hips and your arm movement to simulate a real kick. By throwing the kick feint with the same motion as your normal kick, your opponent will be forced to react to your feint.

#3. The Fake Jab

The jab feint is the easiest feint to learn because it doesn’t require a lot of coordination or footwork. The key to using a good jab fake is to throw the jab consistently at your opponent. A good jab will force your opponent to react to the strike by blocking or parrying the attack. Once you set up your jab, you can then throw the fake, and throw another strike after.

Final Thoughts

If you want to get good at faking out your opponents, you need to learn how to sell your feints. The first step to doing this is practice in front of a mirror where you can see yourself throwing the feint. It is important that the motion of your feint is similar to your normal strike. So whatever technique you are using, you need to be able to sell the technique so your opponent reacts.

When you throw the fake, if your opponent doesn’t react to it, then you won’t be able to land a strike afterwards. Good fighters are good at reading feints and will only react slightly, which makes it difficult to land your follow up attacks. Some fighters will use their teeps to disrupt any fakes that you throw at them.
